Book Review – Dorothy Must Die

Book Review – Dorothy Must Die

Dorothy Must Die! I love retellings of fairy tales and this one by Danielle Paige totally captured my interest when I saw it at Barnes & Noble. I read the blurb on the back cover and was instantly intrigued. A version of The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy is evil? Sign me up.

So the gist of the story is that Amy, a teenage girl from Kansas, is sucked up in a tornado and deposited in… you guessed it, Oz. Sound familiar? Good, because the parallels don’t end there. The parallels are fantastic, partly because the balance of good and evil (or wicked in this case) has been tipped. The characters and creatures you think are wicked are actually good, but technically still wicked. There isn’t a whole lot of “good” happening in Oz at the time that Amy gets thrown into the mix. Even those who are trying to better the situation are, by definition, wicked witches. But when Dorothy the supposed “good girl” from Kansas is now the evil overlord, anything can happen. I consider that to be one of the perks of this book – because all of the characters being twisted into new shapes, it is hard to figure out who to trust and almost impossible to tell what will happen next. THE SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS IS GOING TO BE A TV SERIES. I know that this is old news but nevertheless, still exciting to yell from a rooftop. Or silently yell from my couch. Book Recommendation – Moriarty

If you love everything Sherlock, this book is for you. The story takes place after the Reichenbach Fall in Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories and weaves in elements of the original as well.

There were several moments in this book when my mouth was hanging open from shock. I really want to read the rest of the books that Anthony Horowitz has written in this same Sherlock vein.

This is a great Sherlockian style mystery. Loved it!

Book Recommendation – The Night Circus

The Night Circus! I finally read the book after hearing so many great things about it and I was not disappointed. The story is so magical and gorgeous. The characters are very unusual and I was kept guessing about what would happen next with them. The circus itself is captivating and I genuinely wish I could visit it. Highly highly recommend!

P.S. pay attention to the dates at the beginning of the chapters! The storyline can be confusing if you don’t.
