Happy Wednesday!

This week’s topic is “Books you felt betrayed by”.

This was a really fun topic because it is not something I usually think about with books and characters. Well I guess some characters, as you’ll see below. So here is my list of top betrayers.

  1. The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner – I don’t want to spoil anything but if you read it, you know what I’m talking about. I’m still mad about it. I love the book, but hate that particular part.
  2. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn – only because the twist completely got me. I was 100% duped, and it was awesome. So in this case, it was a good betrayal, if there is such a thing.
  3. Life of Pi by Yann Martel – I felt totally betrayed by the ending, but again, it was kind of in a good way. I love a good plot twist. **SPOILER** the whole story is this fantastical journey with a boy and a tiger trying to survive, but then we, kind of, learn that it was actually much more mundane and horrifying. I do love the twist at the end though, because it blew my mind.
  4. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood- I only felt betrayed because of the ending. It seemed like an abrupt stop, even though it made sense. I was just expecting there to be more about Offred’s possible escape and life.
  5. Captain America being Hydra because WTF. I am glad that the writers/creators have walked that back since, because it was total bullcrap. That “development” was a complete and utter betrayal of their readers and fans.

I am sure there are some other characters I have felt betrayed by, but that is all I can think of at the moment. Maybe I should throw Scar in there, he betrayed everyone… or the evil guy from UP…or Grant Ward from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D… Ooooooo yeah that one was a doozy. He totally gets an honorable mention.

What characters or books have you felt betrayed by?
