It’s day five of Blogmas! Thank you Swetlana @ The Caffeinated Bookworm Life, for sharing the 12 Days of Blogmas book event! The idea is to post every other day between December 2nd and December 24, so that you can have fun with some Christmas book posts and look back on what you read in 2017. I am on Day Five: Top 5 New To You Authors. I love discovering new authors, and these five did not disappoint.
Nicola Oon‘s book Everything, Everything was obviously a huge hit, and once I read it, I totally understood why. Oon writes so beautifully and filled every page with so much emotion. The relationship between Maddy and Olly felt so real and beautiful. I look forward to reading more books by her.
Eliza and Her Monsters is Franscesca Zappia‘s second novel (which I just learned) and I want to go read her other two books ASAP. The characters she created in Eliza and Her Monsters were so emotionally diverse and made the book so meaningful. Also, she wrote about mental illness well, and portrayed it in a realistic way, not romanticized. Zappia is one of my new favorite authors thanks to this book.
Warcross is one of my most recent reads and Marie Lu created such a fascinating world in this book that I am eagerly awaiting the sequel. I need to know what happens next! The video game world she created was so cool and made me want to be able to play Warcross myself. The way she described the cities and video game settings made them jump off the page and come alive. I could imagine them so vividly. If Warcross is any example, I am going to love the rest of Lu’s books as well.
Gillian Flynn blew my mind this year. She has awoken a love of psychological thrillers in me (a love I did not think was there). I read Gone Girl first and that twist shocked me to the core! After I finished that book, I needed more so I read Sharp Objects which was just as thrilling. Flynn knows how to write a good plot twist. She is definitely an author I turn to now when I want to read a book that will surprise me.
OMG Victoria Schwab is a queen! The first book I read of hers was A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic #1), and I could not get enough of her writing. She is amazing at creating enthralling fictional worlds and characters. The world she built in the Shades of Magic series was AMAZE-BALLS. I needed to read more of her work so that is when I discovered This Savage Song. It was completely different from A Darker Shade of Magic, but just as compelling, with awesome characters. I want to read The Archived series next.
Here’s to discovering other new authors in 2018 and exploring my 2017 discoveries even more! Who is your new favorite author from this year?
