This week’s topic is “Future classics”.

I loved this topic because it made me look to the future and consider what books and series would stand the test of time. It also made me think about what it would take to be considered a classic. I like how much this topic made me question the content of books more than I usually do when it comes to these topics.  Continue reading “T5W – Future classics”

This week’s topic is “Books you felt betrayed by”.

This was a really fun topic because it is not something I usually think about with books and characters. Well I guess some characters, as you’ll see below. So here is my list of top betrayers.

  1. The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner – I don’t want to spoil anything but if you read it, you know what I’m talking about. I’m still mad about it. I love the book, but hate that particular part.
  2. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn – only because the twist completely got me. I was 100% duped, and it was awesome. So in this case, it was a good betrayal, if there is such a thing.
  3. Life of Pi by Yann Martel – I felt totally betrayed by the ending, but again, it was kind of in a good way. I love a good plot twist. **SPOILER** the whole story is this fantastical journey with a boy and a tiger trying to survive, but then we, kind of, learn that it was actually much more mundane and horrifying. I do love the twist at the end though, because it blew my mind.
  4. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood- I only felt betrayed because of the ending. It seemed like an abrupt stop, even though it made sense. I was just expecting there to be more about Offred’s possible escape and life.
  5. Captain America being Hydra because WTF. I am glad that the writers/creators have walked that back since, because it was total bullcrap. That “development” was a complete and utter betrayal of their readers and fans.

I am sure there are some other characters I have felt betrayed by, but that is all I can think of at the moment. Maybe I should throw Scar in there, he betrayed everyone… or the evil guy from UP…or Grant Ward from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D… Ooooooo yeah that one was a doozy. He totally gets an honorable mention.

What characters or books have you felt betrayed by?

Happy Wednesday!

This week’s topic is “Favorite Science Fiction & Fantasy Books” *BooktubeSFF Awards Crossover Topic!*.

I.Love.Fantasy.And.Science Fiction. No matter the medium: books, movies, TV shows, etc. I mean Doctor Who, Star Wars, and Marvel are my favorite franchises. I also read the books  that are published by/about Doctor Who and Marvel. I think the reason I love those genres so much is because it creates different worlds and futures that I get to live in for a little while. So here are my favorites!

  1. The Martian by Andy Weir – this book completely enthralled me, and it makes me want to read more science fiction.
  2. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer – I adore this series. One of my favorite series of all times. Definitely.
  3. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell – I just finished this book today and I could have easily read 2 or 3 more books about this world and characters.
  4. Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer- This was one of my favorite series when I was a kid. I haven’t read the whole series, only the first…four I think. The first one is my favorite though.
  5. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern- This book is pure magic and is so mesmerizing. Gorgeous writing.

Honorable mention – Harry Potter because duh. It is the OG fantasy book for me and is probably one of the reasons I love the genre so much now. Thanks J.K. Rowling, you da best.

Fantasy is probably my favorite genre, what is yours? And why? I hope you enjoyed my post!

This week’s topic is “Books to get you out of a reading slump“.

I love all of these books so this list kind of turned into a “read all of my favorite books!” post, BUT I promise they will break you out of the meanest slump this winter.

1. Cinder by Marissa Meyer – This is the first book in the The Lunar Chronicles series and it will pull you into the series, therefore slump broken because there are four books to read! Plus several “in between” books. Reading slump smashed!

2. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell – such a fun read with great relationships between sisters, families, friends and boyfriends. It was a really refreshing read for me for some reason.

3. The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde – The first in the Thursday Next series and one of my all-time favorite books. The story is set in a world that is very book centric and that alone is splendid but all of the literary puns and allusions make it an absolute joy.

4. The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson – I think I can easily promise that this book will be like nothing you have read before. The story is quirky, somewhat ridiculous and completely enjoyable. Also, each of the characters are distinctive and enthralling. This book could snap even the most intense slump.

5. Scrappy Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick – this is a light, fun read that lets you into Kendrick’s mind a little bit. As far as memoirs go, it is one of my favorites because it felt like Anna Kendrick was speaking directly to me. I felt like we were friends after I finished reading and made me want to read more memoirs (ha! another way to snap a slump).

I hope these books help if you are in a slump! You should read them even if you aren’t slumping because they are all fabulous 🙂 Let me know in the comments what book helped you get out of a reading slump!

This week’s topic is 2017 Debuts You Are Excited For”.

I had to do some research about this because I am really bad about knowing about book releases. I’m so focused on the books on my TBR list I kind of ignore new books until they are actually published and on the shelves. BUT…I did do some research and the following books sound awesome.

  1. Jeff Giles, The Edge of Everything, January 31
  2. Elan Mastai, All Our Wrong Todays, February 7
  3. Danielle Paige, The End of Oz, March 14
  4. Francesca Zappia, Eliza and Her Monsters, May 30

And…

5. The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu, April 26 – I have this book on hold at my library right now because I really, really want to read it before the TV series is released.

I am sure I will come across other book debuts, but these are some that look pretty darn great. I love book adaptations to the big or small screen and I know there are quite a few coming in 2017. Here’s to a great year filled with new books and new movies/TV!

Who has read The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood? What did you think? Will you be watching the Hulu series? Let me know in the comments.
